Ornate Wrought Iron Late 17th/Early 18th Century Candle Holder

An exquisite and exceptional example of late 17th to early 18th Century blacksmiths art.

A naive yet beautifully and deftly made work of folk art, consisting of numerous decorative scrolls standing upon four feet surrounding a drip plate. It was created, not only as a very practical piece, but also to look charming and romantic.

Worth noting are the hand-forged holders for what must have been large beeswax candles, and the elegant and practical carrying handle with pommel centrally located between the candles.

This piece has a rich deeply coloured and patinated scumbled surface from years of use.

The work of a Northern European Blacksmith who we can consider as a Master-craftsman who understood the balance between creating a practical working object and an object of beauty.
